Good Will Hunting is a film made in 1997. Will Hunting (Matt Damon) is a secret genius who, rather than having a job that would suit his IQ, works as a janitor at a university.
Director Gus Van Sant cleverly shows us Will Hunting's meaningless, unimportant life by putting together scenes in which Will looks like a worthless loser. One of these scenes involves Will getting into a street fight and getting arrested. Meanwhile Professor Gerald Lambeau (Stellan Skarsgard) is searching for Will as he has just realised Will is the unidentified genius who has been figuring out extremely hard maths problems in the university. The two comes to an agreement that if Will works alongside Professor Lambeau and goes to counselling, the Professor will pay his bail. And so the remarkable story begins.
In one of the first scenes we see Will in a bar with one of his friends who would also be considered worthless. It's a normal night for them and they are having a few drinks. Will announces he's going home to which his friend answers it's only ten o clock. This is where the movie really changes, we see Will at his bathroom mirror trying to figure out the maths sum the Professor had previously left on the chalk board in the university hallway. The audience now begin to realise there's more than meets the eye when it comes to Will.
Matt Damon's performance of a careless, thoughtless, arrogant low life is astonishing. Helped by his therapist Dr. Sean Maguire (Robin William ), the two develop a very interesting relationship. Dr. Maguire wants to help this boy realise his full potential instead of being stubborn and throwing his life away. Watching the relationship grow has a heart-warming effect on the audience.
With director Gus Van Sant and producer Lewrence Bender, this film has managed to win awards such as 'Academy Award for best original screenplay', 'Academy Award for best supporting actor' and that is just to name a couple. This is a magnificent movie.
